About Tech Tycoon

Not a quiz. A technology economy you have to survive.

Six rounds, one currency, and a leaderboard decided by final valuation rather than by who answered the most questions.

Every team is a company

You start with 1,000 TechCoins and a blank balance sheet. Everything after that is a decision: spend, save, risk or invest.

Knowledge is capital, not points

Right answers pay TechCoins. What you do with them decides whether you win — the highest score does not automatically take the title.

The market moves under you

Ten technology sectors trade live. A single announcement can rewrite the leaderboard between one round and the next.

Preparation pays off

The cybersecurity you bought two rounds ago is what saves you when the breach lands. Nobody tells you which crisis is coming.

How it works

Six steps from a team name to a valuation

You will spend the whole event arguing with your own team about whether to spend or save. That is the game.

  1. 01

    Register your team

3 to 5 members, first or second year. You get a Team ID like TT26-021 and a password.

  2. 02

    Check in and get funded

On event day your wallet opens with 1,000 TechCoins. Everyone starts level.

  3. 03

    Earn through Tech Pulse

Twenty questions. Answer fast for a speed bonus, and choose when to gamble on a Double Down.

  4. 04

    Bid, build, survive, invest

Auction lots blind, found a startup, weather the crises, then trade the Tech Exchange.

  5. 05

    Make the final five

The top teams by valuation go through to the Billion Dollar Battle and bet their capital on the answer.

  6. 06

    Highest valuation wins

Wallet + company + portfolio + assets. The champion is whoever built the most, not who knew the most.

Competition rounds

Six rounds, each one a different way to lose your money

Each round rewards a different instinct. No single strategy carries a team through all of them.

Round 1

TECH PULSE

Twenty questions across AI, programming, cloud, security, hardware and startup history. Answer in the first half of the clock for a speed bonus.

The twistSome questions are marked HIGH RISK. Before you see them, commit: Play Safe for +100, or Double Down for +300 — and −200 if you are wrong.

Round 2

TECH AUCTION

Categories go under the hammer. You bid without seeing the question, and only the winner gets to attempt it.

The twistA bid in the last ten seconds pushes the clock out. Win the lot, answer correctly, take the reward — get it wrong and your bid is simply gone.

Round 3

BUILD YOUR TECH EMPIRE

Found a startup, pick an industry, then spend: engineers, AI specialists, cloud, databases, CDNs, backups, GPUs.

The twistEvery purchase moves eight live stats and your valuation. Spend everything and you are exposed; hoard and you are worth nothing.

Round 4

CRISIS MODE

Breaking events hit the hall. A cyber attack. A data-loss incident. An investor with a term sheet and thirty seconds on the clock.

The twistWhat you own decides what it costs. Bought cybersecurity? You take a quarter of the damage. Never bought backups? Hope it wasn't data loss.

Round 5

TECH EXCHANGE

Ten technology sectors with live prices, real volatility and a portfolio that marks to market in front of you.

The twistMarket events fire without warning. A global cybersecurity incident sends one sector up 35% and drags two others down with it.

Final

BILLION DOLLAR BATTLE

Only the top teams by valuation. Each question, you commit capital before the question is revealed.

The twistCorrect doubles your stake. Wrong takes it. The last question allows ALL-IN — and every year, somebody takes it.

Why participate

Because it is nothing like the last one

DECRYPT was ciphers, hidden files and Morse code. TECH TYCOON is a market, a boardroom and an auction house.

Built for your year

Pitched at first and second years. No competitive programming, no prior CTF experience, nothing to install.

You will actually talk to each other

Every meaningful decision needs the team to agree in under a minute. That pressure is the point.

Real concepts, disguised as a game

Valuation, dilution, runway, risk management, portfolio thinking. You will use these words correctly by the end.

Prizes and a leaderboard the whole hall watches

Live rankings on the projector, a cinematic finalist reveal, and a winner announced by valuation.

Rules

Ten rules, and one of them is about cheating

Read these before the event. Most disputes on the day come from the first four.

  1. 01Teams of 3 to 5 members, primarily first and second year students.
  2. 02Every team starts with exactly 1,000 TechCoins. No team starts ahead.
  3. 03One device may be signed in per team at a time. Signing in elsewhere ends the earlier session.
  4. 04All timers are run by the server. Refreshing your browser will not restart or extend a clock.
  5. 05Answers, bids and decisions lock the moment you submit them. There are no take-backs.
  6. 06A Double Down is committed before the question is shown, and it is charged whether or not you answer.
  7. 07You cannot bid or spend TechCoins you do not have. Coins committed to a live bid are held until that lot closes.
  8. 08Organisers may freeze the leaderboard at any point. When frozen, nobody sees the standings — including through the app.
  9. 09Sharing answers between teams, using a second account, or attempting to interfere with the platform means disqualification.
  10. 10Organiser decisions on scoring and disputes are final.

FAQ

Questions teams actually ask

Tech For Need

Who is running this

Tech For Need · DYPIU

Tech For Need is the student technology community at D. Y. Patil International University. We build events that teach something real — and that people talk about afterwards.

Last year we ran DECRYPT: cryptography, steganography, hidden files and timed CTF challenges. TECH TYCOON is a deliberate turn in the opposite direction. Instead of asking what you can decode, it asks what you would do with a thousand TechCoins, a company to build and a market that will not sit still.

What would you do with them?

Bring three to five people who disagree with each other. That is the ideal team.
